I'm a mechanical engineering student at the University of British Columbia, in Vancouver. I'm there on a Presidential Scholars Award and I expect to finish in 2030.
What I care about is the part of engineering where an idea becomes a physical thing. I like mechanical design and CAD, I like understanding how a material behaves before I commit to it, and I like the manufacturing step, because that's where a design either holds up or quietly falls apart. Robotics and automation pull me for the same reason — they're the point where mechanical design has to cooperate with software and sensing.
I'm particularly interested in vehicle safety systems. How a structure behaves when things go wrong is a harder and more consequential design problem than how it behaves when everything goes right, and it's the direction I'd most like to take my work.
Most recently I spent four months building an automated profilometry system for UBC's Electron Microscopy Laboratory under an NSERC Undergraduate Student Research Award, and a year designing hardware for UBC Formula Electric. I'm currently in San Francisco on the engineering team at Colare.
Outside of engineering I co-founded the BC Junior Chess Association and ran it for three years, which taught me more about organising people than any class has.
